G.
Giambene received the Dr. Ing. degree in Electronics from the University of
Florence, Florence in 1993 and the Ph.D. degree in Telecommunications and
Informatics in 1997.
From
1994 to 1997, he was with the Electronic Engineering Department of the
University of Florence where he supplied the task of Technical External
Secretary of the European Community Project COST 227 ("Integrated Space / Terrestrial Mobile
Networks") and he also contributed to the "Satellite
Integration in the Future Mobile Network" (SAINT, RACE II) Project
within the RACE II framework. During these years he studied problems related to
Dynamic
Channel Allocation (DCA) and handoff techniques
in mobile cellular networks.
From
1997 to 1998 he was with OTE of Marconi Communications - Mobile Networks, where
he was involved in a GSM development program. In the same period he also
contributed to the activities of the COST 252 Project ("Evolution of Satellite Personal Communications from Second to
Future Generation Systems") for what concerns the performance analysis
of packet access schemes for Low Earth
Orbit Satellites.
At
present, he his assistant professor with the Information Engineering Department
of the University of Siena, where he is working on efficient access schemes for
future Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), Medium Access Control
(MAC) protocols for wireless systems, cross-layer techniques for mobile
satellite communications, mobility
models for 3G systems. Moreover, he contributes to the following research
projects:
o
"Personalised
Access to Local Information and services for tOurists" (PALIO) IST 20656 Project within the fifth Research Program financed by
the European Commission, with an activity dealing with user localization and nomadic access to
information contents;
·
"Multimedialità"
Project, financed by the Italian National Research Council (CNR);
·
SatNEx Network of Excellence of the 6th EU framework.
The
results of his research activity have been published in the book entitled “Protocols for High-Efficiency
Wireless Networks”. For
more details see also the following link.
He has also recently authored a book entitled “Queuing Theory and Telecommunications:
Networks and Applications”. This is a
textbook intended for the courses of Telecommunication Networks. This
book contains many solved exercises on the application of queuing theory to
telecommunication systems. For more details, see the following link.
Dr.
Giambene is a reviewer of the following journals: IEEE Transactions on
